Reach PLC has announced that Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has been awarded £140,600 ($179,500) as part of a ruling in the hacking case against Mirror Group Newspapers. This amount is a fraction of the initial claim of £443,025 made by Prince Harry.
The media company, which owns popular publications such as The Mirror and The Express, revealed that all claims filed after October 31, 2020, are likely to be dismissed, unless there are exceptional circumstances involved. This ruling also grants Michael Turner £31,650 out of his total claim of £136,250. These awarded amounts will serve as a benchmark for calculating damages in the remaining cases.
"We appreciate today's judgment, which provides the necessary clarity for our company to move forward from events that occurred many years ago. We deeply apologize for any past misconduct, acknowledge our full responsibility, and have ensured appropriate compensation," stated Chief Executive Jim Mullen.
At 12:02 GMT, shares of Reach PLC increased by 3%, representing a 0.25 pence rise to reach 8.50 pence.
