Marathon Petroleum, the largest U.S. refinery operator, revealed its plans for expansion and improvement projects at its refineries in Galveston Bay, Texas, and Los Angeles. These initiatives aim to enhance production capabilities, increase reliability, reduce costs, and comply with new regulations.
Galveston Bay Refinery Expansion
The company will construct a high-pressure distillate hydrotreater with a capacity of 90,000 barrels per day (b/d) at its Galveston Bay refinery. This project, set to be completed by the end of 2027, is designed to boost the production of higher-value finished products. With a crude capacity of 625,000 b/d, Galveston Bay refinery is among the top three refineries in the U.S. in terms of capacity. Furthermore, it currently has a diesel hydrotreating capacity of 60,000 b/d.
Los Angeles Refinery Improvement
Marathon Petroleum is also undertaking improvement projects at its Los Angeles refinery, which has a capacity of 382,000 b/d. These initiatives aim to enhance reliability, decrease costs, and increase energy efficiency. The company expects to complete this project by the end of 2025. Additionally, the improvements will help meet new emission reduction regulations.
Marathon Petroleum will provide further details on these refinery projects and its quarterly performance during a conference call scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET.
