A former financial advisor, Keith Todd Ashley, has been handed a life sentence in federal prison for orchestrating a fraudulent scheme that led to the death of a client. The conviction came after Ashley was found guilty on multiple counts of fraud and carrying a firearm in connection to a crime of violence. The ruling was made by U.S. District Judge Amos L. Mazzant.
Deceiving Clients and Leading a Lavish Lifestyle
According to federal prosecutors, Ashley embarked on a long-term scheme in 2016, defrauding his clients out of approximately $1.1 million. He enticed these individuals by promising to invest their money in opportunities that would generate guaranteed returns ranging from 3% to 9% annually. However, instead of fulfilling these promises, Ashley diverted the funds to support his extravagant way of life and sustain his struggling brewery business.
It is worth noting that Ashley's attorney declined to comment on the case.
This sentence serves as a reminder that those who betray the trust of their clients and engage in fraudulent activities will face severe consequences for their actions.
Alleged Murderer Sentenced for Insurance Fraud and Suspected Homicide
A shocking case involving insurance fraud and a potential murder came to a significant milestone as the defendant received his sentence. Ashley, a trust controller, was accused of changing the beneficiary on a client's life insurance policy to himself. Although he has not been convicted of murder, prosecutors claim that Ashley took the life of his client and attempted to make it appear as suicide by gunshot. After the unfortunate incident on February 19, 2020, Ashley then went a step further by trying to collect on the life insurance policy and transferring funds from the deceased client's bank account to his own.
The police department in Carrollton, Texas identified the victim in this case as James Seegan, a 62-year-old individual. Following months of investigation, Ashley was finally arrested on November 13, 2020. The recent sentencing provides some semblance of relief and justice for the family and friends of James Seegan, who have endured immense pain and grief as a result of Ashley's appalling actions.
U.S. Attorney Damien M. Diggs expressed his sentiments regarding the case, stating, "Mr. Ashley's actions of defrauding and ultimately taking the victim's life is reprehensible and indefensible." However, despite this sentencing, it is important to note that the Dallas County District Attorney's Office may still pursue state murder charges against Ashley.
The Carrollton Police Chief, Roberto Arredondo, commented on the development saying, "We are pleased that justice has been served for the family."
