Best Buy Co. has issued a recall for more than 900,000 Insignia pressure cookers due to multiple reports of their contents being expelled under pressure, resulting in severe burn injuries in some cases.
Recall Details
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission posted a notification on Thursday stating that the recall applies to both 6- and 8-quart Insignia pressure cookers. These pressure cookers were manufactured in China and imported by Best Buy.
Between October 2017 and June 2023, these pressure cookers were sold at Best Buy retail stores and on the company's website at prices ranging from $50 to $120.
Safety Concerns
Best Buy has received reports of 31 incidents where the contents of the pressure cookers were expelled under pressure. This includes 17 reported burn injuries, including cases of second-degree burns and severe burns.
The issue with these pressure cookers lies in the incorrect volume markings on the inner pot. This can result in overfilling the pots, leading to ejection of contents when using the quick-release method or opening the cooker while the contents are being pressurized.
Number of Units Affected
The total number of pressure cookers affected by this recall is approximately 930,000.
Impact on Best Buy
In response to this recall, Best Buy's stock experienced a minor decline of 0.1% during morning trading on Thursday. Over the past three months, the company's stock has fallen by 19.8%. This is notable in comparison to the SPDR S&P Retail exchange-traded fund (XRT), which has seen a decline of 12.4%, and the S&P 500 (SPX), which has experienced an 8.8% decrease.
It is crucial for consumers who own one of the recalled Insignia pressure cookers to discontinue use immediately and follow the instructions provided by Best Buy for returning or obtaining a refund for their product. Your safety is our priority.
